Red Breasted Nuthatch in Ontario
We saw this Red Breasted Nuthatch at the Sibbald Point Provincial Park in Ontario.
This bird makes funny sounds and can descend head downwards on tree trunks. You can find out more about this bird here
Considering switching to a “real” VOIP service
I’m considering switching our residential phone service to VOIP. We’re currently paying close to $40/month; which includes a network access fee that was cleverly concealed from us until the first bill. I’ve estimated that our bill would come down to about $10/month.
Our existing service is provided by our cable provider, and although it is VOIP, it has arbitrary restrictions and costs that makes it more similar to a typical analog landline.
Benefits would be:
- lower cost
- unlimited call blocking (no limit on the number of blocked numbers)
- multiple phone numbers, in different area codes
- can be used away from home, using VOIP software on a computer or a cell phone (Fring seems to do this.) This would translate in a 95% drop in long-distance rates on my cell phone
In theory, all you need is:
- a router on which you can install OpenWRT and Asterisk
- a SIP VOIP service subscription
- an IP telephone or an analog telephone adapter
… and ideally some sort of battery back-up.
Web developers are getting tired of IE6
Here’s the latest in the anti-IE6 campaign: http://www.ie6nomore.com/.
I just finished a project for a company where IE6 is the standard browser. I did most of my development on Firefox because it has good developer tools: Firebug and HttpFox. Once it worked with Firefox, I tested with IE, changed the parts that were incompatible with IE, re-tested with Firefox, and repeat until it works for both. Support for Opera and Chromium came for free after that 🙂
The QA team used IE6, so, officially, only ie 6 is supported because other browsers were not tested. An application that was released in August 2009 officially supports IE6 to the exclusion of all other browsers! It will be interesting if they ask external users to downgrade back down to IE6.
Still the best blog ever: http://sisinmaru.blog17.fc2.com/, it’s the best source for pictures and videos of Maru, like this one:
I’m looking for a career change. So far, here’s what I came up with for my next job:
- run for mayor of Toronto. My electoral platform would be twofold: modernize the TTC; negotiate in good faith on behalf of citizens and taxpayers.
- Import a Japanese idea: run a cat café in Toronto.
Does anyone have better ideas?
